What do Terry Funk and Star Wars: The Last Jedi have in common? Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes provided an answer for that this week.
In honor of May the 4th (or May the Force), IGN ranked the Star Wars franchise’s films, with The Empire Strikes Back listed as the greatest and The Rise of Skywalker as the worst. Cody Rhodes, who’s also a Star Wars fan, weighed in with an overall agreement (only swapping Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith on his personal list). One fan, however, questioned if Rhodes really would rank Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the fourth greatest in the franchise.
Rhodes defended his stance by raising an interesting parallel between it and pro wrestling, specifically Luke Skywalker and Terry Funk.
“I love it. LOVE. But my reason is fairly personal and oddly wrestling related,” he wrote on X. “When these legends come back, they’re not the same. Didn’t want Luke with dyed hair and an 8 pack doing flips…I got a broken old man with one last real punch in him. But it was a helluva punch. Kinda’ like Funk. May the 4th be with you!”
Across his 50 year in-ring career, Terry Funk became synonymous with the hardcore style of wrestling. WWE later honored him with a Hall of Fame induction in 2009. It wasn’t until 2017, at the age of 73, though, that Funk hung up his wrestling boots for good.
