Siva Afi remembered for his wrestling career and lasting legacy

Book Pro Wrestlers announced Afi’s passing in a statement shared on social media after receiving confirmation from his family.

The statement read, “We are saddened to learn that Siva Afi has passed away, as confirmed by his family. From his memorable WWF run to his work as Burt Reynolds’ bodyguard and stuntman, Siva lived a remarkable life. More importantly, he earned the respect of those who shared a locker room with him—so many of the wrestlers we’ve spoken with over the years remembered him as a genuinely kind and well-liked man. Rest in peace, Siva Afi. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Born Papali’itele Max Amata Taogaga in Samoa in 1949, Afi began training under Steve Rickard and Peter Maivia in 1972 before making his professional debut in 1974. He spent the early years of his career in New Zealand, where he captured the New Zealand Heavyweight Championship before wrestling throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, and Japan.

One of the defining moments of his career came in August 1985, when he wrestled Ric Flair to a one-hour time-limit draw for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Hawaii.

Afi joined the WWF in January 1986. He was introduced as Jimmy Snuka’s cousin. He enjoyed an early winning streak before later becoming Sivi Afi and eventually teaming with Haku as part of The Islanders under the name High Chief Afi. He departed the company in 1988, later worked as Burt Reynolds’ bodyguard and stuntman, returned to wrestling in New Zealand, and retired in 1997.

Siva Afi’s contributions to professional wrestling spanned more than two decades. As tributes continue to arrive, he is remembered not only for his accomplishments in the ring but also for the kindness many fellow wrestlers said he showed throughout his life.
