First Strike: What We Learned From The Beginning Of The AEW / NXT Wednesday Night Wars

The “Wednesday Night Wars” as they’re being called has officially begun and we saw two great shows in AEW and NXT. It was hard to keep up with both at the same time, but AEW did have all the buzz surrounding it due to the fact that it’s brand new. To many, AEW Dynamite lived up to the hype, but we’re yet to see how things are going to go in the long run.

Thankfully, AEW has the financial backing and it would be ridiculous to expect them to compete with WWE right away, especially when they’re currently going head-to-head with NXT. The week was considered to be one of the most exciting weeks in wrestling in a very long time and for a good reason. Here are a few important things we learned from both NXT and All Elite Wrestling’s Dynamite.

#5.) NXT pulled off a “change the channel moment” immediately

Many fans wondered why NXT opened the show with an NXT title match between Adam Cole and Matt Riddle. Cole ended up winning the bout and afterwards, was confronted by a returning Finn Balor. This was a huge shock because nobody expected a superstar of Balor’s caliber to return to NXT.

Many believed that the more underutilized superstars would be going back to NXT but they took a top superstar instead. He will fit right back in since he was the face of the brand for a good part of a year. It’s going to be really interesting to see how he does and it’s a very sly move from WWE to have the return at the start.
