Luke Paron discusses the vision behind his upcoming short.
Paron will soon release a new short film titled “Arachnid,” which blends elements of the horror genre with personalities from the professional wrestling world. The film itself chronicles the deterioration of a young man’s psyche after witnessing an “enchanting” dance performance.
WrestleZone’s Ella Jay recently spoke with Paron, the short’s director and writer, about the concept behind Arachnid.
“Some of these won’t make sense until you’ve seen the film, but the first major thing, obviously, was the idea of this grotesque woman growing appendages and limbs that were spider-like,” Paron said. “That’s the basis, but you have to find a reason to make that happen in a story. Anyone can think of a cool horror moment. So what inspired the actual flesh out around it?”
The “Flesh” Of The Film
According to Paron, the “flesh” is the psychological downfall that follows the protagonist, portrayed by David Svoboda, after watching the Arachnid, played by Killer Kelly, dance.
“I go to a lot of live theater, and oftentimes you’ll see a theater performer in the big city and oftentimes in musical theater, too, you’ll have a lot of dancers or ensemble and little cast members who aren’t stars, but they make such an impression on you. And a lot of times you’re like, ‘Wow, that person is so beautiful or so interesting or so talented,’ and you know you’re never going to see them again. This is kind of the inciting event of this.”
“This is from the character who just lets that idea kind of roll too far. And also, he’s the lead, male the protagonist of the film. He is kind of in a bad place. He’s watching this performance with a warped perspective. And as she dances on stage, the movement of her limbs, the way she looks and the way the lights hit her, it’s very much about accentuating the body. That’s what leads us to eventually work into this body-horror moment, because you have to find a reason to justify that, or else you could just shoot a proof of concept scene of this crazy spider creature.”
