Jim Cornette Explains Wrestling Terminology Origins

As part of the promotion for their currently “Dark Side of the Ring” series, VICELAND has released an interesting new video featuring Jim Cornette explaining the origins of certain wrestling terminology. After showing off some of the memorabilia he’s collected over the years, the podcast host and MLW commentator picked up a dusty book written by a New York sportswriter in the early 20th century.

The book lays out how things as basic as “angles” and “finishes” were implemented in professional wrestling. He also notes that match finishes used to be communicated via telegram. Wrestlers were given nicknames and winners were said to “go over” their opponents, which connects directly to the terminology we still use today.

“Dark Side of the Ring” airs Wednesdays at 9 PM on VICELAND.
