On Cody Rhodes breaking the throne:
I thought it was awesome. What he wanted to do with that is symbolize that he’s a wrestler right now and not an executive. But art is open to interpretation. If you wanted him to say it was him smashing Triple H’s throne with his stupid sledgehammer then that’s what it was to you. I love it.
On joining AEW:
I’ve always been friends with Cody, Jericho. Bunch of guys that I know there and there are a bunch of guys I haven’t met yet that I can’t wait to work with. Their vision of what pro wrestling is, the first step for me was getting out of WWE, see the landscape. I could do independents, go to japan, just do signings or go to places, do a DDT and get a good pay day but that isn’t what I want to do. The ethos of the place, “Play your music your way,” was all I needed to hear. AEW is the dream. An awesome wrestling company that is actually awesome. It’s a by the boys for the boys type thing. … [The wrestlers] and the fans, we’re all on the same team. I think it’s cool to be a wrestling fan again.
His favorite storyline as a kid:
Bret Hart and Steve Austin for one. Guess who I got a call from this afternoon? “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. We shot the stuff for 30 minutes, had a great conversation. I grew up as a 90s wrestling fan, so any day you get a call from Austin is a really good day. He’s going to do his podcast again in June, so maybe I’ll get in the truck, we’ll drink some “Steveweisers” and we’ll do the podcast.
But to answer the question, it was so realistic and at the turning point of the Attitude Era and how the fans were. USA vs. Canada. It was so hot and real. I was a Bret Hart kid and at the beginning of this, Austin is a bad guy but then people were cheering for him and I was still on Bret’s side. I was like, “Damn you Steve. Leave him alone!”
His disguise he wore to hide before Double or Nothing
I had sunglasses. A hat. A bandit’s mask. I looked like one of the guys in LAX, actually.
