Tony Khan: Sting Teaming Up With CM Punk Is ‘Very Historic’, It’ll Be One Of The Biggest Matches We’ve Had

The “Holiday Bash” episode of AEW Dynamite will air on December 22, just in time for Christmas, and it will fittingly deliver a wonderful gift for wrestling fans of multiple generations. WWE Hall of Famer Sting, one of the icons of WCW, will team up with CM Punk, one of the most popular names in wrestling, and Darby Allin, a breakout star of 2021, to face MJF, a pillar of AEW, and FTR, undoubtedly one of the top tag teams in wrestling today.

During an appearance on Culture State Podcast, AEW President/General Manager Tony Khan hyped up the significance of the bout by calling it one of the “biggest matches” in AEW history. He then noted that it will be remarkable to see Punk team up with “The Icon”, and the location of the bout will be particularly meaningful for Sting, who hasn’t wrestled in Greensboro since 1994, per Khan’s research.

“Sting doesn’t wrestle every week,” said Khan. “He is a regular part of the roster in AEW, but his matches are very special. This match at the Holiday Bash, Sting Darby Allin and CM Punk vs. MJF and FTR is one of the biggest matches we’ve ever had in AEW and it’s one of the biggest matches for sure we’ve ever had on Dynamite. It’s a huge main event, and it’s a big deal for Sting to team with Darby Allin and CM Punk. First time for Punk to team with either of ‘em.

“And Punk and Sting in particular teaming is a very historic thing, I think. And like I said, Sting hasn’t wrestled in Greensboro in over 27 years since he wrestled Ric Flair October 6 of 1994. I can’t find any record of Sting wrestling in Greensboro since then, and I’ve looked.”

Khan then pointed out that it’s fair to wonder if, or when, Sting will wrestle in Greensboro again; he hopes the 62-year old remains active in the ring for the forseeable future, but there’s no way to know when “The Stinger” will hang up his boots for good.

“Sting’s gonna be wrestling here, I hope, for a long time,” said Khan. “But every match he has is special. You never know how many more is gonna wrestle. It’s kind of amazing that Sting is still wrestling, and it’s gonna be a big deal [at] The Holiday Bash.”

With so many special aspects of the match, one thing’s for sure — AEW fans won’t want to miss it on Wednesday night.
