Rey Mysterio is a living legend, and he’s one of the most renowned stars on the WWE roster. It’s easy to forget that he’s been wrestling for multiple decades, as he continues to perform at a high level on WWE RAW. But long before he became the icon he is today, he started out as a young wrestler who was chasing his dream.
During an interview with Brandon Walker of Barstool Rasslin’, Mysterio looked back on his first match, which came when he was only 14 years old. He recalled how he wasn’t paid much for his debut bout; in fact, he didn’t make any money. Instead, he was compensated with a sandwich and a soda.
“That was my first match, I was 14 years old,” said Mysterio. “Imagine that…. It counts because I got paid. Not money, not money, but I got a sandwich and a Coca-Cola. Yeah, it was [a good sandwich], and it was in front of maybe 80 fans outside of a church in a parking lot church in Tijuana.”
Clearly, Mysterio has come a long way ever since, and in the same interview, he expressed his gratitude for his remarkable longevity. He also described a recent conversation with Edge, who reminded him that they’re WWE’s elder statesmen now.
“I was talking to Edge the other day in the locker room, and he was saying, ‘Rey, we’re the only two guys left that have been part of five decades of wrestling’, you know,” said Mysterio. “I started in ‘89, so I was part of the ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, ’10s, and ’20s now. That’s amazing, man. I’m truly blessed to be able to be in this for this amount of time.”
Mysterio continues to both entertain and amaze countless fans, long after he was paid with a Coca-Cola for his first outing as a wrestler.
