Jonathan Gresham On His Future With ROH: I’ll Have To Move On If They Won’t Contract Talent

Jonathan Gresham, the reigning Original Ring of Honor World Champion, is often called one of the best wrestlers in the world, and he continues to defend the title and represent ROH in other promotions. But given his free agency, it’s fair to wonder what his future holds, especially with ROH’s looming return at Supercard of Honor.

In an interview with Alistair McGeorge of Metro.co.uk, “The Octopus” acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the next step(s) of his career. He emphasized his loyalty to ROH for the way it “saved” his life, but he noted that his status with the company moving forward depends on the promotion’s management. Gresham stated that for now, he’s waiting to see what the company does, but he’ll have to move on if he can’t depend on being a contracted member of the roster.

“I have a loyalty to Ring of Honor because it changed my life.,” said Gresham. “I was going in a very bad direction for so many years, and me having tunnel vision on Ring of Honor saved my life. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for Ring of Honor.”

“…So I definitely wanna wait see what Ring of Honor does, but at the end of the day I have to be honest and have to move on if they’re not gonna be willing to contract talent.”

Gresham’s reputation speaks for itself, and he continues to back it up with exemplary in-ring performances. With this in mind, a major promotion like WWE or AEW could eventually look his way, and if they do, the ROH World Champion made it clear that he’d consider signing with them.

“To be transparent – what I’m doing right now is fulfilling, but at the end of the day, I need to make money,” said Gresham. “If one of these places starts knocking, I have to consider it.

“I have a family, I don’t wanna burn my wife out and lose all the things I’ve acquired over these years, so I have to make money. I’ve lived my dream, I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to do. Now, I have to just go with whatever comes, as long as it works out! I have to do it.”

Previously, Gresham’s ultimate goal was to hold the ROH World Championship. Now that he’s accomplished this milestone, he’s aiming to set new milestones, whatever they may be.

“I’ve accomplished everything I’ve ever set out to do in wrestling so, for me now, I have to set new goals,” said Gresham. “But I don’t wanna set unrealistic goals.

“But then, what is unrealistic? It’s really just a big question mark for me, of what comes next?”

Gresham also noted that, in the meantime, he has a few more dates lined up with IMPACT Wrestling. Beyond that, his path forward is an open road.
