New ROH Pure Champion Crowned At ROH Supercard Of Honor

Josh Woods was the reigning ROH Pure Champion at the end of the promotion’s previous era, and he hoped to kick off the new one with a successful defense. But Wheeler Yuta had other plans.

At ROH Supercard of Honor, Yuta challenged for the gold in a Pure Rules Match and won the bout with an innovative pinning maneuver.

Here’s how the match broke down, courtesy of our play-by-play coverage:

ROH Pure Championship: Josh Woods (c) vs. Wheeler Yuta

Woods and Yuta trade technical holds early on. The challenger quickly uses his first rope break. Yuta gains the upper hand and keeps Woods grounded. The champion forces Yuta to use his second rope break. Yuta wrenches Woods’ knee and forces him to use a rope break. They trade blows, and Woods hyperextends Yuta’s arm by chopping it out from under him. He targets the arm with some stiff forearms. Yuta keeps fighting, but he eats an open hand to the face. The challenger drops Woods with a DDT and blasts him with a kick. A running forearm and a diving strike send Woods to the outside, and Yuta dives onto him.

Woods suplexes Yuta into the corner and forces him to use his third ropebreak. Yuta drills Woods with some elbows to the collarbone and stacks him up for the win.
