Jay Lethal Worried Ric Flair Would Bleed Too Much In His Last Match

Two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair competed in his last match on Sunday night. By the end of his first bout since 2011, Flair was bleeding profusely, and ahead of the contest, Jay Lethal was concerned because this element of the bout was uncontrollable.

The Nature Boy headlined his own pay-per-view titled Ric Flair’s Last Match, where he teamed with his son-in-law, All Elite Wrestling star Andrade El Idolo to face Lethal abd WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett.

Following the match, Marc Raimondi of ESPN spoke with the participants after the pay-per-view went off the air last night.  Lethal, who helped Ric Flair prepare for this match, said The Nature Boy loves to call the match in the ring, so a lot that went down last night wasn’t discussed ahead of time except for the fact they knew he would bleed. He noted that he was worried the legend would bleed too much, and they couldn’t plan for this factor.

“That’s the unknown variability,” Jay Lethal said. “I hate to give too much away in wrestling, but Ric, he likes to do what’s called walking and talking. There isn’t a lot that’s planned. But I can foresee how a lot of the moves will go. The only thing I can’t foresee is how much he will bleed, is it controllable? Was it too much? It was out of our hands.”

On the flip side of the match, Flair’s partner Andrade El Idolo called this the most important match of his career and called his father-in-law an inspiration.

“This match is the most important of my career,” Andrade said. “This is unbelievable. I don’t even have words for this. [Flair] feels better than guys 20 years old. He’s an inspiration to me.”

Lethal’s tag team partner Jeff Jarrett was emotional after the pay-per-view. Knowing that it was Ric Flair’s last match, he felt plenty of pressure to make the match work.

“It’s his last one,” Jeff Jarrett said. “If anything goes wrong, it’s on me. It’s on others. I’m so damn happy for Ric, I don’t know what to say… As a spectator, y’all watched it and went home tonight. When you’re participating, it’s a whole other level of pressure that I’ve never been under.”
