Sheamus Thought His Career Would Be Over After WrestleMania 35

WWE superstar Sheamus may be enjoying his current run in the company, but there was a time when the wrestler thought he’d have to retire.

In an interview with CBSSports’ Shakiel Mahjouri on SHAK Wrestling, the former WWE Champion spoke about how he’s enjoying his current run through WWE, and how he is currently more passionate about professional wrestling than he ever has been in the past.

“Oh, it’s an incredible feeling,” said Sheamus. “It kind of came out of left field, to be honest. I’ve kinda been doing this my whole career. I’m very, very physical in the ring. I think there’s a couple things at the beginning of my career that kind of muttered that, the whole stories with Triple H and some other stories backstage were total BS. But I just feel like, no matter what I did, especially in 2012, when I was world champion, the stuff with [Daniel] Bryan, it didn’t matter what I did. The crowd would turn against me because they thought the machine was behind me. No matter how hard I beat him my body, I just wasn’t gonna win them over. So I went away and I came back as a heel. But yeah, I love what I do. I’m still very passionate about what I do, probably more passionate now than I’ve ever been.”

Despite being extremely passionate about his career, Sheamus did reveal that, following a concussion that the superstar received at WrestleMania 35 in 2019 that kept him out of action for eight months, he thought that he would no longer be able to compete. It wasn’t until Sheamus visited Edge at his home that he had some newfound motivation to continue.

“When I got the concussion at Mania in New York, I thought my career was going to be over,” Sheamus said. “I kept doing Celtic Warrior Workouts and I was actually at Edge’s house and I saw the titles on the wall. I saw the intercontinental title, and I was like, ‘I can’t give up now. I’m so close to getting that final piece of the puzzle.’ That motivated me to come back in the best shape possible.”
