The D-Generation X reunion in 2002 might have been a lot bigger if Road Dogg wasn’t in jail at the time.
On the latest episode of the Oh… You Didn’t Know? Podcast Road Dogg was asked if was any truth to the rumors that WWE wanted to bring him back for a D-Generation X reunion in 2002. The WWE Hall of Famer confirmed the story but said he was in jail at the time, so there was no way to make it work.
“Yep, true,” Road Dogg confirmed. “I literally was like in jail or something when they went — there’s a funny story I should have told about on the other podcast that we did about Russo going, ‘Look, I’m trying to get DX back together, bro. Road Dogg’s in jail. Chyna’s over here; she’s doing this. I’m gonna bring in X-Pac, and he’s gonna come in.’
“That was a shoot conversation that was had. Like it was that WWA deal. I had a contract, and they were promoting me, and I was supposed to be in Vegas for the pay-per-view, and I’m in jail in Milton, Florida. And like, people are looking at me like, ‘You’re supposed to be there, right?’ It’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna have the match for the world title.”
WWE did go ahead with a D-Generation X reunion in 2002 with Triple H and Shawn Michaels, but it was short-lived as The Game turned on The Heartbreak Kid, much to the chagrin of the WWE Universe. Road Dogg said from a creative standpoint; it’s hard to keep both of them together when they are both top guys in their own right.
“Shawn and Triple H could never figure out, are they together? Are they separate? You know what I mean? So it’s awesome that they come together and they do this DX thing, but they’re so good at what they do. I hate to leave them together. If I’m in charge of creative, you know what I mean? Those guys can be top guys on either side of the roster. Either one of them, and they are draws, and I could use that and so it’s hard to put them together and make sense of it all and qualify it anyway.”
WWE did eventually do a proper DX reunion in 2006, and the group has appeared sporadically on television for anniversary events. Road Dogg eventually joined TNA Wrestling in September 2002 and worked there until 2009. He eventually returned to WWE in 2011 and briefly worked as a wrestler, and now maintains a role of Senior Vice President of Live Events.
