John Morrison Shares Why His Favorite Opponent Is Taya Valkyrie

John Morrison has wrestled just about everyone in the world of professional wrestling, but his favorite opponent of all time may surprise you.

Former WWE Superstar John Morrison was a guest on Power Up with Tony Horton to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked who his favorite opponent of all time is, Morrison revealed it was his wife, Taya Valkyrie.

“My favorite opponent actually is my wife. I’ve wrestled her twice. I’m 0 and two,” John Morrison said. “She’s a lot tougher than me. But I figured one of these times, her number’s got to come up. The first time [we competed in a Loser Does The Dishes match], she came out with all these dirty dishes and said, when you got married to me, you promised all these things, and now you don’t even do the dishes. As a matter of fact, I brought the dishes here to prove that you haven’t been doing them, and so we had like a loser does the winners dishes for a year match.

“It was so fun. And when we finished, we’ve done it twice [the second match was at WrestleCon 2022]. People usually say you guys look like you’re having the time of your lives in there. And you are because you’re saying all these things that are so mean, but you both know that you’re joking. We did like a plate. She catches it. Then I kick the plate, and it smashes her face. All this stuff. She’s tough. She’s a tough cookie!”

When asked about his favorite city or venue to wrestle in, Morrison said that answer is a lot more difficult for him to answer.

“That’s so tough because they’re very different,” John Morrison said. “Man, saying the Northeast, like the Philly area, digs more of a violent type hardcore style. Japan strong style. San Diego, Mexico, more finesse, flips, a lot more Lucha. The deep south, like Alabama, Tennessee, they like kind of more of a comedy style. You gotta feel it out like you make a generic plan. And then you can tell what kind of crowd you have within a few minutes.

“That’s the beauty of wrestling is the crowd is a character. It’s one of the only things in existence; the point is to entertain the crowd that is there live. So if you’re doing this cool thing and they’re just sitting on their hands, stop whatever you’re doing and get the crowd involved. They might not want to see a bunch of ropes and flips.

“They might just want to see a big guy shove another guy in like like a staredown, and then they’ll get with it. But mastering the art of pro wrestling is mastering the art of making the crowd feel a specific way, and each crowd is different. Babyfaces give the crowd what it wants. Heels take it away. If you can figure out what the crowd wants. Then you get over; then you become a star.”

During a recent interview with WrestleZone, Taya Valkyrie joked about all of the gimmick names her husband has used over the years. Read which last name she’d like him to use before he’s done at this link.
