GUNTHER Wants His Title Reign To Make A Mark In History

The allure of WWE’s Intercontinental Championship has wavered in and out throughout the years, but under the reign of GUNTHER, many have felt the prestige has been restored.

As he closes in on 300 days in his Intercontinental Championship run, GUNTHER prepares for perhaps his biggest task yet — defending it on “The Grandest Stage Of Them All.” This Friday on SmackDown, five hungry competitors will vie for a title shot against GUNTHER at WrestleMania 39. Competing in the fatal five-way qualifying match will be Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, Karrion Kross, and LA Knight.

With the Intercontinental Championship slowly regaining eyes to it again, GUNTHER was recently asked what the title meant to him. “What it mostly meant for me is like a big opportunity. It’s what I wanted. Obviously, it’s a nice accomplishment, and your name is in the history books, more or less. But, that’s also when the work starts,” he told Cheap Heat.

“When there’s eyes on you, when there’s expectations, that’s what I enjoy as well. I felt like, ‘okay, now it’s on me to make the most out of that and make that title the most prestigious title that can be with me as the title holder.’ That’s my approach about it. I want to leave my own mark in history when it comes to that, and I want people to look back at it in the years to come and be like, ‘Yeah, when that guy was on top, that meant something.”
