Tony Khan Says He Legally Can’t Talk About CM Punk’s Return To WWE

Tony Khan can’t weigh in on CM Punk’s return to WWE.

Khan spoke with BBC West Midland‘s Steve Hermon to promote AEW All In 2024. During the conversation, Khan was asked for some thoughts about CM Punk‘s return to WWE.

Khan said he wasn’t dodging the question, but it’s something he can’t actually address.

“I can’t talk about that. Nor do I think it’s the time or the place. I appreciate you asking and I’m very excited about AEW All In at Wembley Stadium,” Khan said. “Not to dodge or duck your question, it’s just something I can’t legally talk about.”

An explanation of sorts

Tony Khan has been relatively quiet about CM Punk since firing him in September. At the time, Khan said Punk was fired with cause because he “endangered people backstage” during the now infamous fight that took place between Punk and Jack Perry backstage at AEW All In.

Later, Khan spoke with Jason Guerrasio of Insider and explained why the way he addressed the crowd after the announcement. Khan stated that he wanted to see everyone, and he felt that he owed everyone some sort of explanation.

“You can’t see everybody’s face from the center of the ring,” Tony Khan said. “You have to choose one side of the crowd to face when you’re in the ring. And I wanted to be able to see everybody. I felt like, I’m not a wrestler and I don’t need to be in the ring, and for this moment, I thought I would just sit down and talk to everybody.

“That’s why I brought out a chair. And when I was done and walked backstage, the first person I saw was Ricky Steamboat and he said, “That was great, you turned the crowd. You turned them around. That’s so hard to do, and you did it.” I felt I at least owed that much to the wrestlers and the fans, to go out there and talk to everybody.”

Khan also made it clear that it meant a lot to him to speak to the Chicago crowd and the city is home to his family.
