Chris Jericho Reminds Everyone He Was WWE’s Original Choice For The Goon

Chris Jericho has once again claimed to be the original choice for WWE‘s The Goon character.

Jericho recently took to social media to chime in on a post from All Elite Wrestling‘s Dax Harwood.

Harwood jokingly referenced a series of failed WWE characters, including The Goon, a hockey character played by Bill Irwin. According to Jericho, though, he was actually the original person to play that role.

Jericho is not only a big hockey fan — his father, Ted Irvine, played professionally for the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues. But this wasn’t the first time Jericho revealed WWE wanted him to play The Goon in the past. In a 2020 episode of his podcast Talk Is Jericho, The Ocho said that Jim Cornette reached out to him about playing The Goon.

“Vince must have said, ‘We don’t want no-name jobbers in my company anymore; everybody should have a gimmick in my company,'” said Jericho at the time. “Jimmy never told me what the gimmick was because right off the bat, I said it was something I wasn’t interested in doing. At the time, I had refocused and said I was going to do ECW. I was following Chris and Eddie and those guys. If I’m going to get to WWE, I’ll get there, but I don’t want to be a spotlight jobber.”
