AEW Dynamite Results (4/17/24): Will Ospreay Takes On Claudio Castagnoli

AEW Dynamite Results – April 17, 2024

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite kicks off with the return of the newly crowned IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Jon Moxley.

Jon Moxley says one of the first championships he ever won as a professional wrestler was in Indianapolis. Moxley says his entire career, he’s been told what he can and cannot accomplish. Moxley said his response then is the same as it is now, kiss his ass.

Mox introduces the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, and the crowd chants you deserve it. Moxley says he’s been chasing this championship for five years, and people have said that winning that title would be impossible. Moxley says it’s not impossible if they knew what was inside him and what he can do when his back is against the wall.

Jon Moxley calls out the Don Callis Family and says Callis is a creep. He’s feeding his faction lies, and they’re buying into it. Moxley is upset about the attack on Bryan Danielson last week on Collision. Moxley says if they think they’re tough, he’ll be around all night, but he doesn’t think anyone will have the guts to do that.

Mox calls out Powerhouse Hobbs and challenges him to a match next week in the main event of AEW Dynamite. Moxley says when he’s done with Hobbs next week, he’ll know that Callis has been feeding him lies.

Mercedes Moné wants to know who attacked her last week on AEW Dynamite

Mercedes Moné is backstage. Moné says last week, someone attacked her in the dark because they were too afraid to face her in the light. Moné says as the CEO, she can’t wait to pay back whoever attacked her last week. Mercedes ponders if it was Julia Hart or someone trying to make her think it was Julia Hart. Moné said she’ll be watching tonight’s mixed tag match closely.

Willow Nightingale was attacked backstage before her mixed tag match with Adam Copeland against Brody King and Julia Hart. This puts Copeland in a handicap match to begin the matchup.

Brody King and TBS Champion Julia Hart defeated TNT Champion Adam Copeland and Willow Nightingale

  • Willow Nightingale eventually made her way to the ringside area to turn the tide late in the matchup. Julia Hart hits Nightingale with a steel chain while the referee is busy with Copeland and King. Hart locks Willow in Heartless, and the referee calls for the bell since Nightingale is out cold.

Mercedes Moné hits the ring with a steel chair after the match and chases Julia Hart off. Things are still uneasy between Moné and Nightingale as Moné shakes hands with Copeland.

Renee Paquette is backstage with Samoa Joe. Joe says Swerve Strickland will one day make a great champion, but right now, he’s a nuisance. Joe says he’s had every championship opportunity he’s had, but he comes up short and chokes. It’s clear that Joe forgot that Swerve had a reign as AEW World Tag Team Champions with Keith Lee.

Samoa Joe says Swerve is a choke artist, but he won’t have to worry about that at Dynasty because he’ll choke him out instead.

No video package for FTR’s match with The Young Bucks at AEW Dynasty

A video package for the FTR and Young Bucks match at Dynasty is cut off by Matthew and Nicholas backstage. The Jacksons say they’ll put it on social media later, and they’re about to go out there and put on a preview of this weekend’s pay-per-view. Kazuchika Okada says after tonight, PAC won’t make it to Dynasty.

Is HOOK tired of dealing with Chris Jericho?

Chris Jericho comes to the ring, followed by FTW Champion HOOK. Taz is in the ring to attempt to mediate this encounter. HOOK is in the corner eating chips. Chris Jericho thanks HOOK for coming out, and the crowd boos Jericho. Jericho says he pulled HOOK off the ring apron last week because he wasn’t listening to him and that it had nothing to do with Shibata.

Jericho says he is the learning tree and says everyone who has listened to him in AEW has gotten to the next level. Chris claims everyone who’s gone through the Jericho Vortex has come out of the other side better for it. Jericho wants to know if HOOK is ready to learn under his learning tree. HOOK says no, and the crowd loves it.

HOOK says he doesn’t need Jericho’s help. Jericho tells him not to be stupid, Taz tries to tell Jericho to relax, and Jericho tells him to stop. Jericho says he’s only doing what Taz should have done 30 years ago and given him some proper guidance.

Taz and Jericho get into it again. Jericho says HOOK isn’t as good as he thinks he is. Taz tries to intervene again and Jericho pushes him down. The crowd chants that Jericho has f*cked up. HOOK grabs Jericho by the collar and shoves him into the corner. HOOK says he’ll show him how good he is anytime, any place, and tells Jericho to get out of his ring. Jericho eventually leaves.

Swerve Strickland is ready for AEW Dynasty

Swerve Strickland is backstage with Renee Paquette. Strickland laughs about Samoa Joe calling him a choke artist. Strickland says he’s stumbled throughout his own career, but he’s always fallen forward into success. Swerve talks about all the times he got put down and got back up.

Strickland says that this Sunday at Dynasty, Joe will call him the new AEW World Champion. Renee asks Swerve what makes him so confident. Strickland says, with all due respect, this isn’t something he should answer to her; he should answer it to Samoa Joe.

Swerve gets up close to the camera and says he’ll tell Joe to his face in the ring later on tonight.

Deonna Purrazzo defeated Mariah May (w/ Toni Storm and Luther)

  • Deonna Purrazzo reverses a Mariah May pinfall attempt with one of her own to secure the pinfall victory.

Toni Storm attacked Deonna Purrazzo after the match, which brought out Thunder Rosa. Rosa took out Luther and saved Purrazzo. But Purrazzo and Rosa still didn’t see eye to eye, and they got into a shoving match. May neutralized Purrazzo, but Rosa still got the better of Storm and smeared lipstick all over her face before Luther helped her out of the ring.

Bullet Club Gold are backstage. Jay White challenges The Acclaimed to a winner-takes-all match with the Ring of Honor Six Man Tag Team Titles and the AEW Trios Championships. The Acclaimed respond and say they accept. This match will take place this Sunday at AEW Dynasty: Zero Hour.

In a preview of Dynasty, The Acclaimed will take on The Gunn Club on Collision this Saturday night.

Orange Cassidy defeated Shane Taylor (w/ Lee Moriarty and Anthony Ogogo)

  • Orange Cassidy hits Shane Taylor with two Orange Punches to score the pinfall victory.

Lee Moriarty and Anthony Ogogo attack Orange Cassidy after the match. Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal try to come out and make the save, but are laid out by steel chair shots delivered by Trent Beretta. Shane Taylor Promotions lays their flag over a knocked out Cassidy.

Will Ospreay defeated Claudio Castagnoli

  • Will Ospreay hits Claudio Castagnoli with the Hidden Blade to score the pinfall victory.

The rest of the Don Callis Family hits the ring to attack Claudio Castagnoli and this brings out Jon Moxley. Moxley and Hobbs go at it in the ring and Mox gets the better of him. Ospreay screams at the Don Callis Family for getting involved in his business and storms off.

Two matches are announced for this Saturday’s AEW Collision:

  • The Elite take on FTR and PAC
  • Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli take on Kyle Fletcher and Konosuke Takeshita in a Bunkhouse Brawl

A preview of AEW Dynasty?

Swerve Strickland and Princa Nana come to the ring. Strickland says he knows he’s gonna be Samoa Joe on Sunday because he saw the fear in his eyes last week on Dynamite when he held the AEW World Title above his head. Swerve says Joe knows he’s going to defeat him for the AEW World Championship and asks him to come to the ring so he can tell him like a man.

Samoa Joe tries to come out but he’s stopped by a ton of security and won’t let him get in the ring. Swerve stomps all of the security from the top rope and takes him down so he’s face to face with Joe in the aisle. Joe and Swerve begin to brawl and Joe gets the better of Swerve and takes him out.

Joe gets in the ring and corners Prince Nana but is saved in the nick of time by Swerve. Swerve hits Joe with the House Call but Joe recovers quickly and hits Swerve with a Muscle Buster and stands over him with the title to close the show.
