Jinder Mahal Recalls His Initial Response To Tony Khan’s Controversial Tweets About Him

Jinder Mahal looks back on Tony Khan‘s controversial tweets.

Earlier this year, many wrestling fans aimed heavy criticism toward the announcement of HOOK challenging Samoa Joe for the AEW World Championship. AEW President Tony Khan later addressed this criticism on Twitter, highlighting his belief in there being a double standard. In comparison to HOOK, who was then 28-1 in AEW, Khan noted that WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship number one contender at the time, Jinder Mahal, hadn’t won any matches over the previous year. Despite Mahal’s glaring losing streak, Khan pointed out there seemed to be no outrage following WWE’s decision to book him in a world title match.

On a recent episode of Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Jinder Mahal recalled his reaction to seeing Khan’s tweet. “I was at home, I think it was early in the day. I think I just did cardio. Drew [McIntyre] had texted me. And I got like a bunch of texts in a row I was like what I got to see this. I opened up to Twitter. And that’s what I saw,” Mahal said. “Thank you, Tony you made that match with Seth [Rollins] more interesting. Yeah. People thought I was gonna win it just to spite Tony.”

As Mahal alluded to, Khan’s disgruntled tweet subsequently led many fans to speculate that WWE would counter by crowning him as the new World Heavyweight Champion. Ultimately, WWE opted to keep the title on Seth Rollins, as he defeated Mahal on the January 15 episode of WWE Raw.

Note: Mahal’s interview with Insight With Chris Van Vliet was filmed prior to his release from WWE on April 19.
