At NJPW Dominion on June 9, El Desperado defeated Taiji Ishimori to win the NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 31 tournament. In doing so, he won the tournament for the first time. As a result, Desperado has earned a shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, which is currently held by SHO. He challenged SHO to face him in a Steel Cage match for the title.
Desperado defeated DOUKI in the semifinals, while Ishimori beat TJP to advance to the finals.
Desperado is a three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. He is also a four-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion.
Master Wato previously won NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 30.
