AZM Wants Mayu Iwatani’s IWGP Women’s Championship

The “High Speed Bomb Girl” AZM has her eyes set on Mayu Iwatani‘s IWGP Women’s Championship following their 5 Star Grand Prix encounter.

As previously reported, AZM and Mayu Iwatani faced off in singles action for the 5 Star Grand Prix Red Stars B block this past August 18 in Kobe. Prior to the match, both women tied for the block’s lead at 6 points a piece. Despite seeming to be the underdog due to her opponent’s endless list of accolades, AZM pulled out the surprise win after debuting the Icchoagari move (a double underhook Canadian destroyer) into her signature AZM Sushi roll up.

The win ultimately sent her to lead the Red Stars B block, making her one step closer to winning the 5 Star Grand Prix 2024.

AZM challenged Mayu Iwatani for her belt right after the match and sarcastically boasted about her victory. Mayu then complimented her for her demeanor and fighting spirit, but turned down the challenge for now. “You’ve [AZM] grown so much. The day has come where I lost to AZM. But don’t underestimate me [Mayu Iwatani], an old lady. AZM beat Mayu Iwatani, who is at the peak of her popularity right now, so of course there’s no reason for me to refuse,” the champion replied. Mayu added, however, that they may revisit the idea of a title match when one of them wins the 5 Star Grand Prix tournament.

AZM is not new to challenging for the IWGP Women’s Championship. She competed in a 3-Way against Hazuki and then champion Mercedes Moné for the title at NJPW Sakura Genesis 2023. Unfortunately, she is yet to challenge for the title again since that opportunity.
