John Cena‘s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber shocked the world, and it was remarkable for another reason as well.
Cena turned on Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and aligned with The Rock in the closing moments of WWE Elimination Chamber. WWE commentator Michal Cole noted that it was probably the most shocking moment in WWE history.
The Guinness Book of World Records posted about John Cena on their official website and noted that he broke the record for the “longest WWE Face run before turning heel.” Cena’s heel turn was stunning, as he had been the face of the company for years, and he previously earned the Guinness World Record for most wishes granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Before he turned, John Cena punched his ticket to WrestleMania. He competed in the Men’s Elimination Chamber and won the match by last eliminating CM Punk. As a result, he will challenge Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE WrestleMania 41.
Shannon Sharpe On John Cena’s Heel Turn
The explosive ending to WWE Elimination Chamber crossed into mainstream media, as it was discussed by Shannon Sharpe and Stephen A. Smith, among others. Sharpe shared his thoughts on the situation on Monday’s episode of ESPN First Take.
“John Cena ought to be ashamed of himself,” Shannon Sharpe proclaimed. “He waited all this time to become a heel… Man, you know what? Cody, me and you against John Cena and Travis Scott. Let’s [make it happen at] Summerfest — SummerSlam, whatever they call it! John Cena, you need to pay for this, and me and Cody Rhodes are gonna make sure you do pay for it. We got something for your tricky you-know-what.”
The Rock’s Message To John Cena
The Rock discussed John Cena’s heel turn at the WWE Elimination Chamber Post-Show. He noted that Cena flew in the morning of the show, and he was flying back out afterward. “The Final Boss” also revealed what he said to Cena before he left.
“What you felt tonight, he didn’t say a word, look, he came out and dropped the mic, that’s decades of a man who gave everything to this business that I love, and now, it’s coming out,” he said. “I told him as he left, by the way, he flew in today, this morning, from Budapest.
“He’s flying out right now to Africa to continue. So that’s the level of commitment. I told him as he left, I said, we say two things in our wrestling vernacular, he said, ‘Hey, thank you for the house,’ and I said, ‘I’m proud of you” It’s a big deal.”
