Toni Storm and Mariah May’s AEW Revolution match is already being hailed as a classic, and AEW superstar Deonna Purrazzo recently heaped more praise on it.
Storm and May’s hardcore match at Revolution was an instant hit, and speaking to Vice, Purrazzo said that the pair set a new standard for how matches like that should go in the women’s division of AEW.
“They were given the opportunity, and they rose to the occasion,” said Purrazzo. “If women want more opportunities like that, we need to take those risks and have those types of matches to show we can do the same thing and sometimes do it better. We’re never gonna make everyone happy. We have to make ourselves happy.
“I think Toni and Mariah killed it. They set a new standard for violence in our division and we get a lot of opportunities to be violent. They upped the ante for women in wrestling, period. I’m so proud of them and I’m proud to be part of a division that puts that out there and says, ‘love it, hate it. We earned this spot and type of match.'”
Purrazzo also touched on the thought by many fans that the match should have been the main event of the show, due not only to the bloody battle, but also the fact that their story had been built up for months. The AEW star said it was a careful balancing act, and that the fact that fans even wanted it is invigorating for the women’s division.
“To see it happen at AEW, like you said, Toni and Mariah, online they were rioting. They thought Toni and Mariah deserved that main event spot,” Purrazzo said. “The fact that the fans continuously get behind these stories and want to see women in better positions makes us work 10 times harder and push 10 times harder for those positions to be a part of that history.”
