Goldberg explains why he laughed at Gunther’s chops in their match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
During their match, the Ring General hit Goldberg with his signature chops. However, Goldberg didn’t react the way fans expected. Instead, he stood still and laughed, showing no pain from the move. Even though Goldberg didn’t sell the chop, Gunther still won the match by putting him to sleep with a sleeper hold, effectively retiring the legend.
Later, Goldberg spoke about the moment on The Ariel Helwani Show. He said he laughed because he didn’t know what to expect, and he didn’t mean to disrespect Gunther. He even apologized for the way he reacted, as it might have been perceived that he was mocking or belittling the WWE World Champion.
Goldberg believes a chop wouldn’t hurt him
In a recent interview on his CarCast podcast, Goldberg explained that the chop didn’t hurt him and he was simply having fun. He also felt that his reaction made sense for his character to laugh it off in the way that he did.
“I’m Goldberg. I’m sorry, but I don’t care how big you are, if you chop me in the fuckin’ chest, it ain’t gonna fuckin’ hurt me. So I mean, it’s a great move in the wrestling world, but Goldberg’s gonna shrug it off, man,” he explained.
“That’s all. It was in the realm of believability, character-wise,” he continued. “But I just have to say, it was only a reaction because I, for some reason, was having a really good time. That’s all.”
The Hall of Famer mentioned he was surprised to see fans reacting so strongly to the moment.
