Gunther Believes His Match With Goldberg Exceeded Expectations

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther believes Goldberg’s retirement match against him surpassed expectations.

Goldberg had his final match on WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in his hometown. He stepped into the ring one last time, where Gunther defeated him using a sleeper hold, officially ending his legendary career. After retiring from squared circle, WWE Hall of Famer shared mixed feelings about his final match.

He felt frustrated that WWE cut the TV broadcast during his post-match speech in Atlanta, where he spoke in front of friends, family and fans. Although Goldberg felt frustrated that WWE cut off his speech, he still had some positive takeaways from his retirement match, praising Gunther and thanking Triple H for making it happen.

While Goldberg’s reaction drew attention across the wrestling world, Gunther believes their match turned out better than most expected. He felt proud of how the match played out. Speaking on Radio Times, The Ring General said, “I was very happy with how everything went [against Goldberg] and I feel like we exceeded expectations for the match.

“For me, it was important to not go out there and have the typical three or four minutes of action and that’s it. I wanted time to tell a story and take the audience on a ride and make them feel bad for him a little bit before it all ends. I think we succeeded with that. He can be very happy with the match and the connection that he had with the audience because that felt very special.”
