John Cena isn’t getting his retirement match in Boston, as it looks like WWE has other plans for the monumental event.
On Friday, WWE confirmed two more dates on Cena’s retirement tour. Cena will appear on RAW in Boston at the TD Garden on November 10. This will be followed by an appearance on RAW at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 17.
Many fans speculated that Boston, Cena’s hometown, would be where Cena has his retirement match in December. However, Friday’s announcement confirmed that is not be the case anymore.
Now, a report from WrestleVotes has revealed the city where John Cena’s retirement match will take place. According to the outlet, Cena’s final match will take place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The match will take place at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th. The date and event was previously known, but the city has not been publicly announced.
Was Boston ever considered for John Cena’s retirement match?
According to The Takedown on SI’s Jon Alba, sources claimed that the city of Boston made a hard push to host Cena’s retirement match. However, WWE asked the city to cover the costs of hosting the event. This is something they had not previously done for WWE events in the past.
Alba added that Boston made a very strong push to host the event in December. It was noted that WWE and TKO also want Cena’s retirement match to be a major tourism destination event. However, Alba pointed out that doing that match in December in Boston near the holidays was not an easy sell.
In addition to the Boston and New York dates, John Cena will make appearances in the following cities and events:
- SmackDown in Chicago, IL — September 5
- RAW in Springfield, MA — September 15
- WWE WrestlePalooza in Indianapolis — September 20
