AEW Star Thought He Was Being Pranked When They Reached Out To Him

Powerhouse Hobbs is a regular fixture in AEW, but he thought getting an offer from the company was a joke at first.

Hobbs spoke with The Drive – 96.5 The Fan while promoting this week’s Dynamite and Collision tapings in Kansas City. During the interview, Hobbs said he actually didn’t reply to AEW for a few hours when they initially reached out to him in 2020. Hobbs said he thought it was a prank at first, but soon realized it was legitimate.

“I had just got laid off from my job. My daughter was a couple months old. I couldn’t get hired anywhere. I applied at fast food spots, they were like, nah, because I was overqualified from what I was told,” Hobbs explained (H/T WrestleTalk).

“But man, I got a call, QT Marshall actually texted me and I didn’t respond back for like, three, four hours because I thought somebody was ribbing me. Then I got a text from Cody Rhodes. I was just like, I’ve got to bet on myself at this point.”

Since debuting in AEW, Hobbs has been the AEW TNT Champion on one occasion, and he was the Face of the Revolution ladder match winner in 2023. Hobbs is currently one of the AEW World Trios Champions, holding the titles with Katsuyori Shibata and Samoa Joe.

Hobbs currently does not have a match scheduled for this weekend’s AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view. His teammate in The Opps, Samoa Joe, is scheduled to challenge Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Championship at the event.
