Tony Khan wants AEW to have another Shaq Attack.
Khan recently spoke with Sportico’s Sebastian Milo at the ‘Invest In Sports: New York’ conference. Khan was asked about bringing in celebrity crossover talent to AEW, and if there was a name he’d like to bring into the fold. After giving it some thought, Khan said he’d love to continue the story that Shaquille O’Neal told when he appeared for the company in 2021.
“Some of the players of the Jaguars and Fulham, people have asked me about getting them in the ring. That’s a tremendous question. If I thought about it for a moment, I think that if you look at the history of pro sports, pro boxing, there’s been some great pro boxers that have come into pro wrestling,” Khan explained. “There’s been some great MMA stars that have come in and done really well with pro wrestling. Of course, a lot of the top athletes that are crossover stars.
“For me, the best person we had, and I would love for him to come back any time, would be Shaq,” Khan said. “Shaq’s 1-0, but then he’s been away from AEW. He disappeared out of the ambulance in 2021 and we haven’t seen him since, so I would love to get Shaq back in the ring. He’s got to be one of the all-time greatest stars in basketball and he’s undefeated in AEW.”
Shaquille O’Neal teamed with Jade Cargill to defeat Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet on the March 3, 2001 “Crossroads” edition of AEW Dynamite. Shaq was ultimately written off by being loaded into an ambulance, but mysteriously vanished from the back of the vehicle.
