AJ Lee says meeting with Lita when she was a fan played a significant part in how she interacts with her own fans.
AJ Lee was a guest on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story podcast. Apart from the other things they discussed, Lee also spoke about her strong connection with the fans. Lee recalled meeting WWE Hall of Famer Lita at a signing when she was a fan and said that the way Lita made her feel seen that day had a substantial impact on how she treats her fans now.
“My first signing was Lita,” AJ Lee began, “and I wrote her a letter, and I’m sure it was like the most embarrassing thing in the world. If she had been mean or dismissive or if she was not anything but warm and wonderful, who knows what weird direction I would’ve went? Maybe I would’ve hated wrestling and never done it.
Looking at the clip of her meeting with Lita, AJ Lee said, “So that little girl is starving, she is probably living in a motel, and she (Lita) doesn’t know that, but she’s so kind to me, and she held the letter, and she’s like, ‘I will read this.’ Then she gave me her marker, and I kept the marker for years and years.
“I showed her the video. She’s like, ‘I’ve seen that.’ Somebody sent it to her and told her this is back in the day. She didn’t know what that kid was going through, and that was like a pivotal moment. Who knows what would’ve happened if that didn’t go that way and I didn’t feel seen?
“So now when I do these signings,” AJ Lee continued, “it’s like, ‘You’ve given me your whole day, you’ve traveled, you’re waiting in line for seven hours, and I only get two minutes with you, they’re gonna be the best fu****g two minutes in the world. We’re gonna become best friends, and we’re gonna know your middle name.
“They’re so meaningful to me (because she knows what it means to be in line). It means a lot, it could really change things, so I hope they know they’re seen. I see them, I’m one of them, and I’ve always felt that way, just like a fan that snuck onto television.”
