Hollywood star Cary Elwes once shared a hilarious story about Andre the Giant releasing a massive fart on the set of The Princess Bride, and it literally stopped production.
Cary Elwes, best known for his work in projects like The Princess Bride, Saw, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Stranger Things, revealed the unforgettable moment in his book, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. Elwes described a scene where he and Andre the Giant, who played Fezzik, were filming a key moment involving Miracle Max’s pill.
Elwes wrote that during the scene where his character, Westley, wakes up from being “mostly dead,” Fezzik cups Westley’s mouth and delivers the line, “I guess not very long.” But right after saying it, Andre unleashed what Elwes called one of the most monumental farts anyone on set had ever heard.
Andre the Giant’s fart had the crew taking cover
“Now I suppose you wouldn’t expect a man of Andre’s proportions to pass gas quietly or unobtrusively, but this particular one was truly epic, a veritable symphony of gastric distress that roared for more than several seconds and shook the very foundations of the wood and plaster set we’re now grabbing on to out of sheer fear.”
He adds, “It was long enough and loud enough that every member of the crew had time to stop what they were doing and take notice. All I can say is that it was a wind that could have held up in comparison to the one Slim Pickens emitted in the campfire scene in Mel Brooks’s Blazing Saddles, widely acknowledged as the champion of all cinematic farts. Except, of course, this one wasn’t in the script.”
The moment has become one of the most famous behind-the-scenes stories from The Princess Bride, perfectly capturing Andre the Giant’s larger-than-life presence both on and off screen.
