John Cena recently explained why he believes WWE star AJ Styles is the nicest person in all of sports entertainment.
While speaking with Bill Simmons, John Cena shared a story about how their famous feud first came together and how difficult it was for him to find anything negative to use in their rivalry. Cena said, “AJ is the nicest human being in sports entertainment.”
He explained that when he first sat down with Styles to plan their feud. He didn’t even know why they were supposed to be fighting. Cena told Styles, “Man, this is going to be okay. Why are we fighting?” He’s like, ‘What do you mean, why are we fighting?’ I want to be the champ.’ That’s not good enough.”
Cena went back to his bus and searched the entire internet for hours trying to find anything negative AJ Styles had ever said about anyone even one bad sentence. He found nothing. Eventually, they figured out the story together.
Cena said Styles told him, “Okay, this is AJ. This isn’t Allan, but maybe AJ’s thinking that if you were never around, I would be where you’re at, and I’d be so much better. Because when in that ring, I am better.” I’m like, ‘We got it.'”
“And we built our story, culminating with even the match at the Royal Rumble with: ‘I, AJ, am a better in-ring performer. You are charismatic but hella lucky. You put these two in a ring together, and I will run circles around you every time.'”
Cena said that approach immediately split the audience WWE fans backing Cena, and longtime TNA fans rallying behind Styles. It gave their feud real emotion. Cena finished by saying the biggest lesson was simple, “You have to sit and ask, ‘Why are we fighting?'”
