John Cena Comments On A Potential WWE Commentary Run After In-Ring Retirement

John Cena addresses a potential non-wrestling role in WWE after retirement.

Speaking to The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, the former 17-time world champion said he will always remain involved with WWE in a non-wrestling capacity.

“You’ll see me at WWE events,” Cena said. “I’m going to be involved as long as they will have me until I am need to until I need to be replaced. But I will look like this (wearing a suit and tie).”

When asked if fans could see him calling matches, John Cena said that while he would love to do commentary, he might not be able to pursue the role due to its full-time commitment requirements.

“I would love to do it,” he said. “I think the announcing crew we have now. I’m such a big fan of Stu Bennett. I think he’s carving out an excellent legacy for himself. I know Michael Cole’s getting a little long in the tooth. He’s probably wanting to move on. I would love to sit at the table. I think we have — and I love listening to Big E call.

“You have to have the time to regularly commit to be an announcer. Like, I know Pat McAfee struggled with that. He split himself in a bunch of different directions, and gosh, I don’t blame anybody for going until you can’t go, But, like, he didn’t have it in the tank. Like, he can’t be — you can’t be everywhere at once.” [H/T WrestlingInc]

John Cena reveals the biggest failure of his WWE career

Elsewhere in the same interview, Cena revealed that not taking advantage of the ruthless aggression character was his biggest failure.

“Blowing and completely disintegrating ruthless aggression, it almost got me fired,” Cena admitted. “So here I am, a young whippersnapper, debuting in Chicago because The Undertaker is sick. I get to challenge Kurt Angle to a match on SmackDown in front of a sold-out house at the formerly known as the Rosemont Horizon.

“The Olympic gold medalist says, ‘What makes you think you can stand out here with anybody else? What do you have that I don’t?’ ‘Ruthless aggression,’ I slap him in the face, that’s aggressive. Then the match we went on to have was pretty ruthless.”

John Cena’s retirement match is set for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Never-Seen 17 will square off against Gunther in his swansong. The Ring General defeated LA Knight in the finals of The Last Time Is Now Tournament to earn the right to face Cena.
