Why don’t we see WWE events take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom anymore?
The Hammerstein Ballroom is a historic wrestling venue in New York City. The venue sits down the road from Madison Square Garden and has hosted events over the last few decades from the likes of WWE, ECW, AEW, Ring of Honor, and more.
However, WWE hasn’t hosted an event there since August 2006, when they taped an episode of their weekly ECW program at the venue. Even with AEW and Game Changer Wrestling hosting events there in recent years, WWE has avoided returning to the building. But why?
Actor Timothée Chalamet was a recent guest on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About? Podcast. During the discussion, Chalamet declared ECW One Night Stand 2006, which took place in the Hammerstein Ballroom, as his favorite wrestling pay-per-view of all time.
Chalamet would go on to reveal that he wants to attend a wrestling event at the historical venue and even pitched the idea to Triple H for WWE to run a future event there, but was told that it’s impossible for the company to make any money there.
“I want to go see a show at Hammerstein,” Timothée Chalamet said. “I talked to Triple H. He said it’s basically impossible to make money there. He said there’s one elevator you have to load everything in and out of.”
Cody Rhodes would respond by having his boss’s back.
“He’s right,” Cody Rhodes said in response. “And I appreciate that he gave you logistics because at least he was thinking about it. The other thing is, it’s the worst back of house ever. God bless Manhattan Center and Hammerstein. It’s open windows, freezing, there’s no room for anything.” [H/T: WrestlePurists]
It wouldn’t be hard for Chalamet to attend a wrestling event at Hammerstein
Just because WWE won’t run an event at Hammerstein Ballroom, it doesn’t mean all hope is lost for Chalamet.
All Elite Wrestling will return to the venue later this month on December 20 and 21 for tapings of AEW Dynamite and Collision that will air on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Tickets for both events are still available. So the ball is in your court, Chalamet.
