Legendary Comic Book Writer Highlights How Great Mick Foley Is

Mick Foley has left a lasting impression.

Following his decision to part ways with WWE due to their ties to USA President Donald Trump, Mick Foley has garnered support from a number of his wrestling peers and figures from other industries. This includes comic writer Gail Simone, who is best known for her work on DC’s Birds of Prey and Batgirl.

On X, Simone chronicled a first-hand, heartwarming story of Foley extending kindness to others at a C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) in 2008. According to Simone, one morning was particularly glum for the C2E2 guests due to the overnight passing of artist Michael Turner. Mick Foley, however, emerged as a shining light.

“In the morning, most comics people didn’t really feel like eating, but the little restaurant became a bit of an emotional MASH unit, where people were talking about Michael. Coming down in the morning to visit friends, we were behind Mick [Foley] as he was going down with a friend/handler/someone to get breakfast. I recognized him, but wrestling is not my thing and the morning was already sour,” Simone wrote.

“I heard his handler say he only had fifteen minutes to eat before he was supposed to be at his first signing. Mick said it would be okay, he was starving, but that should be enough time if they hurry. They were doing the please-don’t-stop-me walk you do at cons sometimes. He was doing good, until the kids. Some kids spotted him from the restaurant and started freaking out. One was in a wheelchair. I could see his handler’s face fall, they knew exactly what he would do.”

Simone Witnesses Foley’s Grace

In that moment, Simone recalls seeing Foley taking the time to sign autographs and take photos with all the children that approached him, so much so that he missed his scheduled breakfast. The former WWE Champion then went straight to his convention table, where he’d make even more people’s days, despite being hungry.

“That was my first encounter with the man. He didn’t even know I was there, of course, and he wouldn’t know me if I met him. But I cannot tell you how much it brightened my miserable day of gloom to see this famous guy, this hero to so many, thinking of everyone but himself and being a joy to so many kids at his own cost to comfort,” Simone continued.

“It sounds like a little thing. But I’ve been around celebrities and comics people without a tenth of that grace. So I don’t know him. I have met him a few times since. But I am very grateful he was there that rotten day, to show that being kind shows strength and character.”
