John Cena speaks on his WWE retirement match.
John Cena competed for the final time inside the squared circle at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The former 17-time World Champion tapped out to Gunther, stunning a crowd that had grown accustomed to watching their hero never give up for more than 20 years.
The reaction to Cena’s final match was polarizing, to say the least. WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque was blasted by the live crowd inside the building. As for Gunther, The Ring General needed security assistance to safely make it past rowdy fans after the match.
When the dust settled, Gunther compared Cena’s WWE retirement to The Undertaker’s legendary WrestleMania streak ending at the hands of Brock Lesnar a couple of years ago.
“I think you can make it because I think back to then it was a similar situation, there was a real outrage about it, and it was the right thing back then because Brock, he’s still in the company, and was the mountain to climb for 10 years now,” Gunther said.
Speaking of Lesnar, a major voice actor believes The Beast and The Ring General will cross paths somewhere down the line.
John Cena comments on his final WWE match
John Cena was the latest guest on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast. During the interview, Cena offered a thoughtful analogy for his retirement match, comparing the sendoff to a peaceful death.
“You may not think I’m going to retire, but I am. I’m comfortable with that. Please just get the closure you need,” he said. “So now I’m out there. They hate the guy I’m working with. They universally cheer me, which is f*cking rare. And for the last five minutes, everything I preach about storytelling, drama, and having a conversation with the audience comes together.
“The people I love are in the front row. I know my colleagues are watching on the monitor backstage. We’re just in a sleeper hold, man. We’re just in a sleeper hold, having that conversation with the audience.
“So as I essentially take my last breath, I think about struggle. If you picture someone facing the natural causes of a scenario, or however you imagine loss in your life, we’ve all been through it. They struggle. They hang on just long enough to say goodbye to everyone who has been meaningful in their life.”
John Cena explains his WWE sendoff
“That whole day was filled with so many unbelievably vulnerable, meaningful conversations. Then you realize, I’ve connected with everybody I love. Physically, I feel great. I think it’s time to take that last breath, and that’s it.
“I hate to keep going back to obituaries, but you always hear things like, ‘This person died peacefully.’ Knowing that, you think, man, we’re in a good place. We’re going to be great going forward.
“And this is literally what the bottom of the T-shirt says: I gave everything. Thank you for everything. In that one moment, that was it. Going peacefully. So for me, a whole tour, a year-long story, is just the cycle of someone facing the end of their life.”
Later in the interview, Cena also mentioned ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,” seemingly confirming the meaning behind his recent Star Wars-related post.
