It appears, based on a recent trademark filing, that WWE is going all-in as it pertains to an aspect of Gunther’s current character.
Last year, Gunther ended the WWE careers of both Goldberg and John Cena. Now all signs point to him ending AJ Styles WWE career this weekend at the Royal Rumble. If you can’t tell, it certainly appears that WWE wants to lean into this aspect of The Ring General’s character going forward.
On January 26, WWE filed for a new trademark with the USPTO for the name “Career Killer.” The description of the trademark reads as follows:
CAREER KILLER™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.
If WWE namedrops Gunther as a “Career Killer” this weekend at the Royal Rumble, we’ll definitely know where that came from.
