CM Punk recently shared a part of his career with WWE that he thinks doesn’t get nearly enough credit.
During his first run in WWE, Punk had many major moments. He held the WWE Championship for 434 days. He also led multiple factions and had big feuds, including a notable rivalry with Jeff Hardy. Punk led two major factions which were The Nexus and the Straight Edge Society.
The Straight Edge debuted in 2009 as a villain faction. Punk led the group and promoted a straight-edge lifestyle. That message rejected alcohol, drugs and smoking. The faction included Joey Mercury, Luke Gallows and Serena Deeb. Although it lasted only until 2010, it left a strong impression on fans.
Speaking on You Better You Bet show, Punk said the Straight Edge Society era stands out as the most underrated part of his career. He explained that the faction meant a lot to him personally and creatively.
“If I was to say what was the most underrated iteration of CM Punk or moments in my career, I would definitely say that. Straight Edge Society was kind of near and dear to me. I had… not free reign, but I had a lot to do with a lot of the character direction and what we did.”
Punk shared that WWE did not give him full creative freedom. However, he still had strong influence over the direction of his character and storylines. “What I wanted to do with it a lot of the times got kiboshed, but I did manage to sneak through a lot of stuff that I never thought we would be allowed to do on television.” [H/T: WrestlePurists]
