Cody Rhodes says he “lied through his teeth” when producers asked him if WWE would be okay with him playing Guile in the Street Fighter movie.
During his recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Undisputed WWE Champion addressed his match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42 and also shared some information about how he landed his role as Guile in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.
He noted that he was happy after Roman Reigns first got the role of Akuma in the movie, but also felt a bit of envy. While he thought the producers would not consider more wrestlers for other roles in the movie, he recalled getting a call from Legendary Pictures.
“But I got a call saying, ‘Would you come to Legendary and meet the producer, and talk with the producer?’ I thought it was just a general meeting. Really, sincerely thought it was a general meeting, and I thought, best-case scenario, they’re like, ‘Could you consult?’ because I’ve played this game, and I love this game,” Cody Rhodes said. “And I had a buddy who played competitively in Japan, and I’m like, ‘Man, I know enough, and maybe they’ll have me as a consultant. If not, great meeting, happy to go.’
“I get there, and the director’s on Zoom, he’s in Australia, producer’s across from me. I’m just thinking, ‘Okay, cool, we’re gonna talk Street Fighter, talk 1994,’ and then they said, ‘Give us a second, the head of the studio wants to come down here,” Cody Rhodes said. “Okay, that’s cool, I like meeting people, no pressure meeting for me.
Cody Rhodes was worried WWE wouldn’t allow him to take time off to film the movie
Speaking further, Cody Rhodes recalled the head of Legendary Pictures informing him that they’d like to have him as Guile in Street Fighter. However, when the executives asked if WWE would be okay with him taking time off for the filming, Rhodes noted that he “lied through his teeth,” and said the promotion wouldn’t have any problem.
He shared that WWE President Nick Khan and Chief Content Officer Triple H understood and didn’t stop him from capitalizing on the big opportunity.
“She comes in, and just like all the aura and swagger you could imagine. The whole room is there, and she just hits it. She’s like, ‘Hey, you know, I know your schedule is what it is, but we’d really like you for the role of Guile, and I think you’d be incredible. The dates are gonna be what the dates are. These guys are gonna give you the information, but I’m just happy to meet you. This is gonna be awesome.’ She leaves,” Cody Rhodes said.
“So I’m like, ‘What? What are we doing here? Is this real?’ I’m also like lying through my teeth a little bit because the guy’s asking me, ‘You think WWE would be okay with that?’ ‘Yeah, they’re gonna be great. Champ’s gonna leave for a bit. They’re gonna be great.’ Thank gosh, WWE’s President Nick Khan, he knew the power. He knows, he understands. Triple H understood. It was an easy sell,” Cody Rhodes said.
