CM Punk Claims WWE ‘Manipulated’ Him Over WrestleMania Main Event

World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has opened up ahead of WrestleMania 42. He revealed that his long pursuit of a main event spot may not have unfolded the way many assumed during his first WWE run.

Speaking at ALL THE SMOKE: Unplugged Podcast, Punk reflected on how central the WrestleMania main event was to his career goals. He also outlined how that ambition may have been used against him behind the scenes.

CM Punk stated that his desire to headline WrestleMania had become a well-known topic within WWE. He believes that awareness played a role in how he was handled.

“I almost think it was used against me in a way, it was dangled like a carrot because they knew this was something I wanted,” Punk said.

Punk explained that being goal-oriented made him more vulnerable to that approach. In his view, the opportunity wasn’t just a milestone — it was leverage.

CM Punk also suggested that if he had achieved that milestone earlier in his career, his relationship with WWE could have taken a very different direction. “If I did it before… I don’t think I would have bothered to look back. It would have been a closed book,” he said.

He added that his drive has always been about growth and new challenges. Punk noted, “I’m always in pursuit of… even if it’s just that 1% better every single day.”

The WWE World Heavyweight Champion ultimately headlined WrestleMania 41 in a triple threat match against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, fulfilling a long-standing goal. Now, he steps foot into the main event again at WrestleMania 42, this time defending the World Heavyweight Championship.

With WrestleMania approaching, Punk’s comments add another layer to an already intense period in WWE. Whether this reflection is closure or another chapter remains to be seen. However, it’s clear that the “main event” meant more than just the final match on the card.
