WWE’s John Cena Details Hair Transplant Recovery Process After Surgery

John Cena has opened up about a personal change that fans couldn’t miss. However, the timing and process behind it reveal more than just a new look.

Speaking during WrestleMania weekend appearances, including TMZ’s Inside The Ring, the 17-time world champion shared details about undergoing a hair transplant and what followed after the procedure — a journey that wasn’t exactly a walk down the ramp.

John Cena explains the recovery process after his hair transplant surgery and how fans inspired him to undergo the procedure

Cena confirmed that the procedure took place in November 2024 and described the early recovery period in blunt terms. “It is a surgery. First 14 days are the most important,” he said, noting the strict care required. “Can’t get [the surgical site] wet, it’s an open wound.”

He added that the aftermath came with visible changes. “Your head swells, [then] the swelling comes down, your skull looks different for a little bit.” Even for someone used to taking hits in the ring, this was a different kind of bump — one that didn’t come from an RKO.

Despite that, Cena didn’t slow down. “I literally got the transplant and went right to pre-prep for a movie in Budapest,” he explained. “I was walking around Christmas markets in Budapest with, like, an alien head.”

The decision to undergo the procedure was heavily influenced by fan reactions over time. Cena previously admitted, “They’ve held me accountable… they’ll eat you alive.” He also acknowledged the chants and signs calling out his hair loss, saying, “As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light.”

Still, the Hollywood star reframed the narrative. Rather than viewing it purely as criticism, he sees it as motivation and a chance to speak openly. “I hate the fact that if there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago,” he said, adding that many men face similar issues.

Cena also detailed his ongoing routine — including red-light therapy, minoxidil, and vitamins — stressing that the transplant simply involved moving his own hair “one by one.”
