WWE legend John Cena addresses the criticism surrounding the format of the John Cena Classic Tournament.
17-time WWE Champion John Cena recently sat down for an interview with Zack Heydorn on The Takedown on SI. During the conversation, he reacted to the criticism about the format of the John Cena Classic Tournament he announced at Backlash. The new initiative will see developmental stars face off against the main roster wrestlers, and will have a unique format, which will allow the fans to even vote for the person who lost to become the champion.
Cena noted that the tournament is still a work in progress, and they are still figuring out the best way to do the voting so it doesn’t get sabotaged.
“Okay, great. So, I want to lead with, we gave a lot of information at Backlash. Because it’s an ambiguous piece of work, we’re still trying to figure out the best way to do the voting so it doesn’t get hijacked or sabotaged. All these things are a work in progress,” John Cena began.
“And when I come out on TV and say, ‘Hey, listen for the first time, all participants qualify for a vote, which technically means somebody could lose, but if they win the vote, they’ll be crowned the champion. And the WWE has agreed that they will be the champion of the John Cena Classic. It will be a historically recorded WWE championship.'”
John Cena says the plan is for the tournament to be a one-night event
Speaking further, John Cena stated that the unique format creates intrigue among the fans. He revealed that they’re trying to do a one-night event for the tournament, and described it as WWE’s All-Star game.
“I want the winner of the classic to keep the championship. I never want them to defend it. I want them to take it home. I want them to have that relic of importance because what I’m trying to do is I want to create an event that’s great for the fans and great for the superstars. I want the superstars to say, ‘Hey man, I didn’t get invited this year. I want in next year, and I want to win.’
“So, when you lead with, it’s like a tournament, it’s like this. I know that there’s questions out there. I like that. I like that because there’s intrigue, and yes, there’s going to be perspectives from all angles, and I get all these perspectives. What we’re trying to do is a one-night event. If you look at Saturday Night’s Main Event, if I were to sum up the John Cena Classic in one sentence, WWE’s All-Star game. End stop.”
