John Cena recently opened up about his relationship with WWE creative. The WWE legend explained why he was willing to take risks during his final run, including his controversial heel turn.
At WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, Cena won the men’s Elimination Chamber match. However, Cena shocked fans by attacking Rhodes and aligning himself with The Rock after Rhodes rejected The Rock’s corporate offer.
For years, wrestling fans had asked to see Cena turn heel. But when WWE finally made the change during his retirement tour, many fans rejected the new version of Cena and wanted the old version back.
The reaction eventually led to Cena returning to a more familiar babyface role heading into SummerSlam.
John Cena says he embraces creative risks in WWE
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Cena reflected on the mixed fan reaction to his heel run and explained why he approached the character differently. He said, “When I did, I tried to do it in the most realistic manner. The true heel turn of, um, I mean, there are many, many different ways I could have gone, but I kind of stayed as myself.”
“You know, I didn’t change up the uniform, I didn’t change up the music, and I started to try to find a real place of why I would choose a nonvirtuous path. Me being frustrated with the audience after all these years of being such a polarizing character seemed like the strongest connection, and the audience got a taste of it, and they’re like, ‘No, we want the you back.'”
When asked whether he personally wanted to return to the old version of himself, Cena admitted he simply enjoys trying new creative ideas in WWE. “I always like new creative challenges, and that’s why, I mean, very rarely, I honestly don’t think I’ve said no to any sort of creative decision in WWE.”
“I’ve always tried to embrace it and do the best I can, right up until my final moment of tapping out with fulfillment on my face, which got very mixed reviews as well. I always enjoy a creative challenge, and I’m not afraid to take those risks.”
