Wrestling legend Taz recently explained why he dropped his iconic ECW look after joining WWE.
Taz signed with WWE in 1999. Instead of keeping his classic ECW look, he switched to sleeveless shirts and track pants. The change helped create a different identity on WWE television.
The topic came up after footage from a 2002 WWE dark match resurfaced online. The match featured Brock Lesnar and Batista teaming up against Taz and Spike Dudley. A fan shared the clip on X and wrote, “It’s amazing that this dark match footage from 2002 exists, with Brock Lesnar teaming up with Batista in a losing effort to Tazz and Spike Dudley.”
Why did Taz change his ECW look in WWE?
Taz replied, “It was a dark match, I’m pretty sure Spike and I were Tag Team champions at this moment.” Another fan then asked why he wore a shirt and pants during that period of his career. The fans wrote, “what was the reason behind the shirt and pants at the time of your career?”
Taz revealed the decision was entirely his own. He said he wanted to separate himself from the ECW version of his character before retiring from the ring. He wrote, “It was my idea. I’ve said this on my podcast years ago… I did not want my in ring persona tarnished anymore than they tarnished me. Therefore, I wanted to change my complete look before I retired from the ring. I didn’t want them to have that ECW TAZ look on their programming anymore.”
