Rey Mysterio believes the future of lucha libre is in good hands.
Appearing on The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer was asked who he believes could become the next great luchador. Mysterio admitted that there is no shortage of talented names to choose from but singled out Dragon Lee as someone who reminds him of his younger self.
“Wow, I see so many up-and-coming stars. I see a lot of similarities in Dragon Lee that I had growing up and being part of this business,” Mysterio said. “Like, he’s always willing to learn, asking for advice — a lot of Rey Mysterio is in him.”
The Undertaker was quick to praise Dragon Lee as well, highlighting the young star’s attitude behind the scenes.
“I love him, by the way. Yeah. When he comes down, he’s such a good kid. He’s such a good dude and always wants to do the best that he can, right?” The Undertaker said.
Mysterio then pointed to other standout names who could carry the torch for the next generation of lucha libre stars.
“Yeah. Then Penta comes along, and I see Penta, and I’m like, oh. Penta’s brother, Rey Fenix, is incredible as well. Like, it’s just — there’s so many names you can pick that you can say, oh, these guys are the next guys. Who’s gonna be the one? That’s gonna be up to them.”
Interestingly, Mysterio’s comments came just days after he and Penta delivered what many fans considered a PLE-caliber Intercontinental Championship match on this past Monday’s episode of RAW in Paris, France. Following the bout, Ethan Page and Rusev attacked both men and proceeded to tear Rey’s mask off in front of the stunned crowd.
Dragon Lee attempted to make the save but was quickly overwhelmed by the two heels. Chad Gable then made his way to the ring to even the odds, taking out Page and Rusev before handing Rey back his mask.
