Braun Strowman Reveals Origin of WWE Ring Name

For many years, the world has known Adam Scherr as Braun Strowman, a former WWE star and host of his own food-related TV series. Where exactly did the “Braun Strowman” name come from, though?

According to Scherr, it blends the names of two professional baseball players.

“I had pitched all these ideas for names [to WWE]. I wanted to try and keep like the strongman moniker in there and country strong. ‘Big country’ was my nickname. They shot them all down, either for copyright reasons or they just didn’t like them,” Scherr told 10,000 NOs. “I’m at the Performance Center in Orlando at the time and they call down. They’re like ‘Look we have to have a name for him today. We have to submit all this stuff in for trademark and all this stuff.’

“I’m sitting in the office at the WWE Performance center and SportsCenter is on. They’re talking about Ryan Braun. I’m like ‘Braun, Braun. I’m kind of brawny,’ and then literally they transition right after that they start talking about Marcus Stroman, the baseball player. So literally my name came from watching SportsCenter because they were talking about two guys on TV. So, it was ‘Stoman’ at first, then Vince put an ‘R’ in it. ‘It’s Strowman because he’s a showman.’ That’s exactly how he said it.”

Ryan Braun, a former left fielder, players his entire MLB career with the Milwaukee Brewers (2007-2020). Marcus Stroman remains actively involved in the sport as a current free agent. He previously played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and New York Yankees as a pitcher.

Scherr’s connection to Ryan Braun extends beyond his ring name as the two have posed for a photograph that the former WWE Universal Champion now has hanging up in his Wisconsin house.
