John Cena may have left the ring behind, but fans are still searching for any sign that the 17-time world champion could lace up his boots again.
During a recent appearance at SpaceCon San Antonio, Cena addressed that possibility and delivered an answer that was equal parts humorous and heartfelt.
While the WWE icon didn’t completely speak in absolutes, he made it clear that a return is far from his plans — and it would take an extraordinary offer to change his mind.
John Cena explains why his WWE Retirement matters
During a fan Q&A session, a young fan named Jaden asked Cena the question many wrestling fans continue to ask: Will he ever come back?
Cena’s response drew laughs from the crowd.
“No. What? No,” Cena said before adding, “I think the only person that can convince me to come back given the recent events, would be Mr. Elon Musk, and he’d have to give up a whole lot of his fortune to do so. So, until he does that, I think I’m going to stay retired.”
The comment referenced Cena’s recent statement that it would be “financial suicide” for anyone to try to persuade him into another match.
Still, the former WWE Champion quickly shifted to a more serious explanation about why he wants his retirement to remain meaningful.
Cena noted that fans invested their time, money, and memories into his farewell appearances, including purchasing “Last Time is Now” merchandise under the belief that they were witnessing his final run.
“I want to stay retired,” Cena explained. “A lot of it has to do with my health. But a lot more of it has to do with my integrity.”
He continued by stressing that he gave fans his word that his final year in WWE would truly be his last.
“I told everybody that this last year would be my last year. And I meant it,” Cena said. “I try to lead with honesty. And I know my strongest currency is my word.”
For now, it appears Cena isn’t planning a surprise kickout from retirement. While he jokingly left the door open for a billionaire-sized offer, his focus remains on honoring the promise he made to WWE fans.
