Tony Khan may already be thinking about AEW’s next big tournament. The prospect could bring together tag teams from all over the wrestling world instead of just AEW.
During the AEW Redemption media call, the AEW President revealed that he has been seriously considering an international tag team tournament. He said the idea would be similar to the classic Crockett Cup, with teams from AEW and several partner promotions competing in one event.
Tony Khan wants an international tag team tournament
During the media call, Khan was asked if he would like to hold a Crockett Cup-style tournament for both the men’s and women’s tag divisions. Instead of brushing off the idea, Khan admitted it’s something he’s already been considering.
“Yes, I have been thinking a lot about having a big tag team tournament with teams throughout the world of wrestling,” Khan said.
Over the past few years, AEW has built strong relationships with promotions like ROH, NJPW, CMLL, and others. Those partnerships would allow AEW to include many top tag teams from outside its own roster.
Khan also hinted that the tournament wouldn’t just feature familiar AEW teams. It could also introduce new teams that fans haven’t seen in AEW yet.
“We have a lot of great partner promotions and a lot of great teams we’re building. There are teams featured in AEW, some we’re building up to feature more, and some that haven’t come onto the show at all yet,” he said.
That means the tournament could showcase well-known teams while also giving new names a chance to shine.
Khan also likes the idea of holding a similar tournament for the women’s division. However, he wants to build that division further before making it happen.
AEW has already started putting more focus on women’s tag team wrestling. The company recently crowned its first-ever Women’s World Tag Team Champions, with Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale winning the tournament.
Even so, Khan believes there is still more work to do.
“I would also like to do it as we continue building and developing more women’s tag teams in AEW and ROH,” he said.
Although Khan didn’t confirm the event is happening, he made it clear that it’s something he is seriously thinking about.
