Winning the World Heavyweight Championship is often viewed as the moment a wrestler reaches the top of the mountain. For Batista, however, holding WWE’s biggest prize didn’t immediately solve the financial struggles he had faced throughout the early years of his career.
Speaking with WOLF Gyms, “The Animal” revealed that life behind the curtain looked very different from what fans saw on television.
Batista reveals he was still borrowing money as WWE World Champion
Batista explained that his first few years in WWE were financially challenging, despite steadily climbing the card. While the company covered airfare, nearly every other travel expense came out of a performer’s own pocket.
“They pretty much provided you with airfare and that was it. Not food, not cars, not hotels. None of that.”
The former Evolution member said the constant travel made life on the road expensive. This left him struggling to stay afloat even after capturing the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Triple H at WrestleMania 21 in 2005.
“So my first few years of wrestling, I was broke until 2005 when I became World Champion and started to make some money.”
Surprisingly, Batista said becoming world champion didn’t immediately change his finances. While fans watched him headline WWE programming, he still lived in a small apartment. Moreover, he had to borrow money just to get through each week.
“I was still borrowing money from people, I was living in a tiny apartment when I was World Champion because I had just become World Champion. I hadn’t started making money yet.”
He recalled relying on short-term loans from check-cashing stores to cover everyday expenses.
“I used to go to those check-cashing places and get like a $300 loan… week after week.”
According to Batista, things finally turned around later in 2005.
“Around 2005 is when I didn’t have to do that anymore and I started to make money, but until then, I was grinding.”
Batista eventually wrapped up his full-time wrestling career in 2010 before transitioning into MMA and Hollywood. Nevertheless, he later returned to WWE for several high-profile appearances, including his final match against Triple H at WrestleMania 35. His story is a reminder that even a world title doesn’t always deliver an instant payday — sometimes the biggest victory comes after the final bell.
