Michael Cole has recalled one of the most painful moments of his WWE career, revealing that an on-screen slap from Stephanie McMahon had very real consequences.
During a candid conversation, the veteran commentator reflected on the incident while discussing the long journey it took to become the voice fans know today.
The story emerged during an episode of What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon, where Cole and Stephanie looked back on memorable moments from their years working together.
Michael Cole recalls Stephanie McMahon’s infamous slap in England
While discussing his evolution as a commentator, Cole admitted it took nearly a decade to stop sounding like WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross and develop his own style behind the headset.
“It was a struggle for a decade… trying to figure out what my voice was and how that voice was different from Jim Ross’s.”
Looking back at his early work, Cole acknowledged he often borrowed JR’s signature phrases before realizing he needed to carve out his own identity.
“You’ll hear me screaming… doing the stuff that Jim used to do… and I’m saying to myself, ‘God, this is embarrassing.'”
Stephanie responded by reminding him that everyone has awkward moments before finding their footing.
Cole joked that some of his most memorable lessons came at Stephanie’s hands — and Triple H’s.
“Getting slapped by her was one. Getting a wedgie by her husband was another.”
Stephanie quickly interrupted with a laugh.
“That’s how you really found it. I slapped the s**t outta you.”
Cole confirmed she wasn’t exaggerating. Before filming the segment in England, Stephanie had politely asked if she could slap him.
“You said, ‘You mind if I slap you?’ How hard could it be?”
The answer, according to Cole, was much harder than expected.
“I had ringing in my ears for days.”
The infamous moment came during WWE’s tour of England, when Stephanie was portraying her powerful on-screen authority figure. While the slap was part of the storyline, its impact was anything but scripted. For Cole, it became one more bump on the road to finding his own voice — proving that sometimes the toughest receipts don’t happen inside the ring.
