Val Venis stepped back into the ring for the first time in years this past week.
The WWE veteran came out of retirement to face Rico Gold for Independent Superstars of Professional Wrestling (ISPW) in Wildwood, New Jersey. Making his trademark entrance as “The Big Valbowski,” Venis competed in what he initially believed would be his final match before addressing the crowd with an emotional post-match speech.
Speaking to fans after the bout, the 55-year-old reflected on his decades-long wrestling career and admitted he entered the match believing he would retire in the ring.
“You see, at 55 years of age, I came out of retirement to take on one of the fastest-growing performers in the pro wrestling industry.
“I’ve wrestled all over the world. I fought, I died, and went toe-to-toe with some of the greatest performers to ever set foot in this industry.
“I’m a two-time Intercontinental Champion!”

Venis then revealed the physical toll the match had taken on him while acknowledging that his opponent had earned the victory.
“I came here this evening thinking I would retire in this ring, looking death square in the eyes and calling it a night. I can’t walk.
“But you know… I won’t give you this. You set me up, and you took me down for the one, two, three. But whether someone like you or whether those people like you, that is a win in the victory books that will last forever!”
The veteran went on to share what he described as the four principles that helped him reach the top of the wrestling business. He spoke about the importance of desire and perseverance, encouraging aspiring wrestlers and fans to remain committed to their goals regardless of the profession they choose.
Despite largely stepping away from in-ring competition, Venis has remained active on social media. His posts have frequently drawn criticism from wrestling fans, particularly when he comments on today’s performers. Earlier this year, he took aim at Sami Zayn, writing, “My jockstrap is a bigger draw than Sami Zayn on any given night,” a remark that sparked backlash online.
